Bourbong Street and the Heritage CBD

Late-19th-century commercial streetscape — the CBD with the famous weeping figs

Bourbong Street is the spine of central Bundaberg — a wide colonial-era boulevard lined for several blocks with red-brick and rendered late-nineteenth-century commercial buildings. The standouts are the Bundaberg Post Office (1890, Italianate with a clock tower), the former Commercial Bank, the Bundaberg School of Arts (1888, now a community centre), and Buss Park, the small central garden where the Bundaberg War Memorial stands.

The street is also notable for its weeping figs — a row of mature Ficus benjamina planted in the early 1900s, listed as heritage trees in their own right. A self-guided heritage walking trail covers the buildings; pick up a brochure at the visitor information centre on Bourbong itself.
