Charleville is a small outback town on the Warrego River, far enough west of Brisbane for the sky to feel larger and the distances to start doing their work. It is a practical service centre, but it has more going on than the usual highway stop: astronomy, bilbies, wartime history, and a few monuments to ideas that did not quite work.
The strongest reason to stop is the Charleville Cosmos Centre, where the dry inland air and dark nights turn into guided stargazing, solar viewing, and planetarium shows. In town, the Charleville Bilby Experience gives a rare close look at one of Australia's oddest threatened marsupials.
Charleville also has a knack for unexpected history. During World War II, thousands of United States Army Air Forces personnel were stationed here, a story told at the WWII Secret Base. Near the visitor centre, the Vortex Rainmaking Guns are the wonderful remains of a 1902 attempt to blast drought-breaking rain out of the sky.
