Mary Valley Rattler

A heritage steam train that runs from the old Gympie station up the Mary Valley to the village of Amamoor and back, a round trip of about three and a half hours through farming country and pockets of subtropical rainforest. Trains run several times a week and most weekends.

It's a properly old-fashioned ride — wooden carriages, a working steam locomotive, plenty of whistle-blowing — and the highlight of a visit to Gympie for anyone with even a passing interest in railways.

A story
The Mary Valley line was originally built around 1914 to haul timber and dairy down from the surrounding hills. After it was retired in the 1990s a community trust rebuilt the track for tourist trains, and the C17 steam locomotive that now hauls the Rattler dates from the 1920s.
