Gympie's centre is essentially an open-air heritage museum of 19th-century gold-rush architecture. Mary Street and the lanes around it are lined with sandstone and brick buildings from the boom decades, when this was the richest town in Queensland. Allow a couple of hours to wander the central streets, then drive out to the Gold Mining and Historical Museum on the southern edge of town.
