The Forts Walk

The Forts Walk is the essential hike on Magnetic Island — a 4 km return trail through dense eucalyptus woodland that winds past World War II gun emplacements and observation posts to a headland with sweeping 360-degree views over the island and the Coral Sea. It is the best walk on the island and one of the better short hikes in north Queensland.

The trail starts at the car park on Horseshoe Bay Road, between Arcadia and Horseshoe Bay, and is accessible by bus from either settlement. The path is well maintained and moderately steep in places. Allow about 90 minutes return at a comfortable pace. The eucalyptus forest along the way is one of the best places on the island to spot wild koalas — look up into the forks of the gum trees, especially in the morning. The WWII observation post at the top offers the best view from any point on the island. Start early in the heat of summer.

A story
The World War II gun emplacements were built in 1942 following the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Japanese bombing of Darwin. They were intended to protect Townsville — then a key Allied base — from naval attack. The guns were never fired in combat. The Forts were decommissioned in 1945 without having engaged a single enemy vessel.
