Henschke Cellars

Henschke is a sixth-generation family winery based in Keyneton, on the Eden Valley side of the Barossa. The cellar door is a quiet, serious operation compared to some of the larger estates, and that restraint reflects the wines: Hill of Grace, their flagship single-vineyard Shiraz, is regularly cited as one of the greatest red wines in the world, and the cellar door offers tastings across the full range in an unhurried, knowledgeable setting.

The family arrived in the region with the first wave of German Lutheran immigrants in the 1840s, and their old vines remain a living link to that founding generation. The property also produces excellent Riesling from Eden Valley fruit, and the Mount Edelstone Shiraz is another benchmark wine from old dry-grown vines.

A story
Henschke's Hill of Grace is made from a single vineyard of Shiraz vines planted in the 1860s near Keyneton — one of the oldest continuously bearing Shiraz vineyards in the world. The vines predate phylloxera and grow on their own roots, unvaccinated, which is thought to contribute to the wine's extraordinary complexity.
