Getting There

The Flinders Ranges are about 430 kilometres north of Adelaide. The sealed highway runs through Port Augusta and then northeast; the main access road to Wilpena Pound leaves the highway at Hawker. A standard car can reach Wilpena easily. Dirt roads in the national park require more care but most are accessible in dry conditions by two-wheel drive.

From Adelaide, the drive to Wilpena takes four to five hours. Hire cars can be collected in Adelaide. Rex Airlines and a charter services fly to Port Augusta, from which a car is essential.

For the northern Flinders and Arkaroola, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is strongly recommended. Several roads north of Wilpena become impassable in wet weather even with four-wheel drive.
