Things to Do

The Flinders Ranges reward those who go slowly. The obvious attraction is walking, and there is an enormous range of it — from short gorge strolls to multi-day ridge traverses on the Heysen Trail. But sitting still and watching the light change on the ridges at dusk is equally valid.

Wildlife watching requires patience and early starts. Yellow-footed rock-wallabies are present in Brachina and Bunyeroo gorges and on the slopes above Dutchman's Stern, but they are not tame and disappear quickly if approached. Kangaroos and emus are everywhere, especially at dawn and dusk.

Scenic flights over the Pound and the northern ranges operate from Hawker Airport and Wilpena Resort.
