Cradle Mountain

Jagged dolerite peak above Dove Lake, the emblem of Tasmania's central highlands.

Cradle Mountain is the peak everyone comes to see: a serrated dolerite ridge rising above Dove Lake and the surrounding moorland. On a clear morning it looks almost staged, with the lake below and the mountain catching light before the car parks fill.

The summit walk is a serious route, not a casual extension of the lake circuit. It involves steep, exposed, boulder-hopping terrain and should only be attempted in stable weather by walkers with enough time, gear, and confidence to turn back.

A story
The mountain's shape comes from Jurassic dolerite, the same hard volcanic rock that gives many Tasmanian peaks their columned cliffs. Its dramatic profile is one reason the area became central to early conservation campaigns for Tasmania's high country.
