Getting There

The main route into Devonport is the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Station Pier in Melbourne. The overnight crossing takes approximately nine to eleven hours depending on conditions; the ferry typically departs in the evening and arrives in the morning, though day sailings are also available in summer. The Spirit of Tasmania accommodates passengers on foot and with vehicles, making it the preferred option for anyone planning to drive around the island. Book ahead for summer crossings, especially if bringing a car.

Devonport Airport (DPO) is a small regional airport with regular flights to Melbourne. The airport is a few kilometres east of the city centre. Flying is faster than the ferry but removes the scenic arrival by sea.

By road, Devonport is about 99 kilometres west of Launceston (roughly an hour's drive on the Bass Highway) and approximately 280 kilometres north of Hobart (around three hours). Both routes are straightforward drives on sealed roads.
