Barooga Sports Club

Vast NSW-side club with multiple bars, restaurants, and golf course

The Barooga Sports Club is across the river on the New South Wales side and is the de facto social centre of the area. Inside the sprawling, slightly aging complex are several restaurants, multiple bars, a function centre, a golf course, and the obligatory wall of pokies.

The food is generous Australian-club standard — schnitzels, fish and chips, decent steaks — and the prices are cheaper than Cobram's pub options. Most Cobram visitors end up here at least once. Five minutes' drive over the new bridge, or twenty minutes on foot over the old.

A story
Like many border towns, Cobram-Barooga has a peculiar geography of vice: NSW poker machine laws are looser than Victoria's, so the giant Barooga Sports Club on the NSW side became — and remains — the social anchor for both communities. The trip across the Old Bridge for dinner is a Cobram institution.
