When to Go

The river is the season-setter. November to March is the only time worth coming for a swimming-and-beach holiday; the water warms up enough by mid-November and stays pleasant until late March. December and January are the busiest months — book accommodation well ahead for the school holidays.

Autumn (April–May) is quieter and pleasant for the wetlands and walks, though too cold for the river. Winter mornings drop close to freezing; the country is brown and stripped-back but it can be a fine time for birding and country drives. Spring (September–October) sees the river full from snowmelt and the red gums in fresh leaf.
