Lucky Bay

Lucky Bay, inside Cape Le Grand National Park about 60km east of Esperance, is a serious contender for Australia's most beautiful beach. The sand is so fine and so white it squeaks underfoot, and the water is a shade of turquoise that looks digitally enhanced until you're standing in it. The beach curves in a long arc backed by granite boulders and heath, with almost no development.

The kangaroos that share the beach have become its most photographed feature — western grey kangaroos that come down to the sand, particularly in the morning and late afternoon, and rest or feed entirely unbothered by humans. The campground at the back of the bay fills quickly in school holidays and long weekends; book well ahead. If you're not camping, arrive early — the road in is sealed but the car park has limited space. The beach is at its finest in morning light.

A story
Lucky Bay was named by Captain Matthew Flinders in 1802 when his ship found shelter here from a violent storm. The bay that saved his expedition is now famous for an entirely different reason: kangaroos that have learned to sleep on the beach, apparently drawn by the warmth of the white sand. The roos are wild, not habituated in any managed sense — they just happen to like the beach as much as the visitors do.
