Caversham Wildlife Park

Caversham Wildlife Park is about 20 kilometres northeast of Perth in the Swan Valley wine region, and it is the most hands-on Australian wildlife experience in the metro area. Unlike Perth Zoo, which is a conventional zoo with standard enclosures and viewing distances, Caversham is specifically set up for interaction: you can hand-feed kangaroos from the moment you walk in, hold koalas (WA is one of the few states where this is still permitted), and get face-to-face with wombats, emus, dingoes, and a bewildering variety of native birds. It is unabashedly tourism-focused, but the animals are healthy and the staff knowledgeable.

The park is particularly good for families with children who want to do more than look at animals through glass. The daily shows cover sheep shearing and farm animals alongside native wildlife demonstrations. Combining Caversham with a Swan Valley food and wine tour makes a solid day out — the valley's wineries and artisan food producers are right on the doorstep, with olive oil, nougat, honey, and cheese producers dotted along the Great Northern Highway. Caversham is not easily reached by public transport; the best option is to drive, take a tour, or arrange a car share from the city.
