Viseisei Village

Viseisei village, about 8 km south of Lautoka on the coast road toward Nadi, is regarded by Fijian tradition as the place where the first Melanesian settlers landed in Fiji around 1500 years ago. The village is still active and inhabited, with a community that welcomes visitors on organised cultural visits.

A visit typically involves a kava ceremony (sevusevu), a guided walk through the village explaining traditional architecture and practices, and an explanation of the founding mythology. The coast immediately around Viseisei is also good for walking; the reef is visible from the shore and there are patches of mangrove between the village and the sea.

A story
Viseisei is traditionally identified as the place where the first Melanesian settlers arrived in Fiji, making it the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the country. The village chief still holds a title that reflects this founding status. Whether or not the historical claim is archaeologically verifiable, the village takes the tradition seriously and the oral history associated with it is detailed and specific.
