Garden of the Sleeping Giant

A few kilometres north of Nadi, at the foot of the Sabeto Range (the long ridge whose silhouette looks, with some imagination, like a giant lying on his back), is one of Fiji's oddest visitor attractions: a 20-hectare botanical garden of over 2,000 varieties of orchids. The garden grew out of the late actor Raymond Burr's private orchid collection and was opened to the public in the 1980s.

The paths wind through ponds, rainforest, and lily-covered boardwalks under jacaranda and palms. Allow an hour. It is best combined with a soak in the Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pool, a short drive further into the valley.

A story
The garden was built in 1977 as the private orchid collection of American actor Raymond Burr — better known as TV's Perry Mason — who had a house on the slopes of the Sabeto valley and an obsession with collecting tropical orchids.
