Île aux Canards

Tiny islet 5 minutes from Anse Vata with excellent snorkelling

Duck Island — Île aux Canards — is a tiny coral-ringed islet just 5 minutes by boat from Anse Vata beach, making it the most accessible snorkelling spot in Nouméa. The water around the island is clear and shallow, with coral gardens and abundant reef fish visible within 50 metres of the shore. The lagoon here is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that covers most of New Caledonia's reef system.

Regular water taxis run from the Anse Vata waterfront throughout the day, and the island has a small beach and basic facilities. It is not the most spectacular snorkelling in the lagoon — for that you want Amédée Island further out — but for a half-morning or half-afternoon without a long boat ride, the Île aux Canards delivers genuine reef experience. Gear can be rented at the Anse Vata water sports stands.
