Marché Municipal

Waterfront covered market selling fish, tropical produce, and Kanak crafts

The municipal market occupies a set of blue-tiled pavilions on the waterfront near the port, open Tuesday through Sunday from early morning. One pavilion handles fish — the day's catch from the lagoon, including species you will not easily find elsewhere — and another deals in tropical fruit, vegetables, and spices brought in from across New Caledonia's main island and the outer islands.

A third section carries handicrafts: woven pandanus mats, carved coconut objects, and jewellery made from shell and local stone. The market is at its best on Saturday morning when it fills with local shoppers rather than tourists. The coffee stalls around the edge are good places to watch the activity. Walking distance from Place des Cocotiers and worth an early morning hour before the heat builds.
