Temuka's central South Canterbury location makes it a useful base for half a dozen good day trips. Timaru, the regional centre, is 15 minutes south. Geraldine — boutique food, the Barker's preserves factory, the historic Vintage Car and Machinery Museum — is 20 minutes north. The Mackenzie Country and Lake Tekapo, with its dark-sky reserve and the Church of the Good Shepherd, is 90 minutes inland. Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park is just over two hours by car — far enough that it is best as a long day or an overnight. Closer to home, the Pleasant Point Railway and Historical Museum has a working steam railway and the most complete Richard Pearse aviation exhibit anywhere.
