Auckland's best day trips are on the water. The ferry network is the key — Devonport is 12 minutes across the harbour, and Rangitoto Island is 40 minutes from the Ferry Building on the Waitemata waterfront. Both are easy half-day trips that require no planning beyond buying a Fullers ferry ticket.
Further afield, Waiheke Island (35 minutes by ferry) has vineyards, olive groves, and excellent restaurants — a full day destination that feels nothing like the city. Coromandel Peninsula, a two-hour drive east, rewards those who make the effort with dramatic scenery and Cathedral Cove. Rotorua, three hours south by road, is the centre of Maori culture and geothermal activity in the North Island, and can be managed as a long day trip though an overnight stay is more comfortable.
