Titahi Bay

Titahi Bay is the long, exposed surf beach on the western side of the Porirua peninsula. The beach faces the Tasman Sea and gets a much heavier swell than the sheltered Plimmerton side — surfers and bodyboarders do well here, swimmers should stay between the flags in summer.

The bay is best known for its row of brightly painted historic boat sheds against the northern cliffs, a designated heritage area. The northern headland leads up into Whitireia Park with views across to Mana Island; the southern end of the beach is rockier and quieter. A short ten-minute drive from central Porirua.

A story
The brightly painted boat sheds at the north end of the beach are heritage-protected and have been there since the 1930s. They were originally built by working-class Wellington families who couldn't afford holiday cribs but wanted somewhere to store gear and shelter from the wind on weekends at the beach.
