Whitireia Park

Whitireia Park covers most of the rugged peninsula between Titahi Bay and the entrance to Porirua Harbour. It is a regional park of windswept grassland, low coastal cliffs, and exposed rocky shore, with sweeping views across Cook Strait to Mana Island and on a clear day the snowcaps of the South Island.

A network of walking and mountain-biking tracks loops around the headland, including a 1.5-hour coastal walk from the Onehunga Bay car park around to Titahi Bay. The peninsula is mostly open ground without shade or shelter — pick a calm day. Co-managed by Greater Wellington Regional Council and Ngati Toa Rangatira.

A story
Whitireia Peninsula was returned to Ngati Toa as part of a 2012 Treaty of Waitangi settlement, in recognition of Te Rauparaha's seizure of the land for the iwi in the 1820s and its subsequent loss to settlers. It is now co-managed as a regional park.
