Hawke's Bay Wine Region

The Hawke's Bay wine region surrounds Napier and produces some of New Zealand's best red wines, particularly Syrah, Cabernet-Merlot blends, and Chardonnay. The Gimblett Gravels district, a free-draining gravel plain west of Hastings, is the most prized sub-region — the warmth stored in the stones gives the reds a richness and structure rarely achieved elsewhere in New Zealand.

Craggy Range, in the foothills of Te Mata Peak, is worth a visit for the setting alone — the winery is dramatically positioned and the cellar door experience is excellent. Te Mata Estate is one of New Zealand's oldest wineries and consistently produces outstanding Coleraine (a Bordeaux-blend that is among the country's finest). Church Road, north of Napier, is the most historic winery in New Zealand and offers well-priced tasting menus. Many wineries are within cycling distance; several operators rent bikes and provide maps for self-guided wine tours.
