Sarjeant Gallery

The Sarjeant Gallery at Pukenamu (Queens Park) is Wanganui's most impressive building — a neoclassical gallery perched on a terrace above the city, with a strong collection of New Zealand and international art built up over a century. The permanent collection spans colonial-era landscapes, early New Zealand art, prints, photographs, and works by contemporary Māori artists.

The gallery is currently undergoing a major extension (the new wing is expected to open in the mid-2020s). Parts of the collection are shown in temporary locations around the city while the work proceeds. Check the current opening arrangements before visiting. Even without the full gallery, the building and its hilltop setting above Queens Park are worth the short walk up.

A story
The Sarjeant Gallery was bequeathed to the city by Henry Sarjeant, a Wanganui businessman who died in 1912 and left his collection and funds for a gallery in his will. The neoclassical building was completed in 1919, and its position on the hill above Queens Park — originally chosen to keep the artworks away from the river's floods — gives it a civic grandeur unusual in a town this size.
