Paddle Steamer Waimarie

Restored coal-fired paddle steamer cruising the Whanganui River from the city centre.

The Paddle Steamer Waimarie gives Whanganui one of its most atmospheric short trips: a working riverboat moving at an old-fashioned pace along the broad brown river that made the city. Built in 1899, sunk in the mud for decades, and restored by local effort, she is now the last operating coal-fired paddle steamer in New Zealand.

The cruise is as much about Whanganui's river identity as it is about the boat. From the deck you get time to watch the banks, bridges, rowing sheds, and hills slide by, with enough machinery and restoration story to keep heritage-minded travellers happy. It is an easy choice when you want something slower and more local than another museum stop.
