The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit is the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Palmerston North, which covers most of the lower North Island. The current building was completed in 1925 in red brick with an Italian Renaissance facade, and significantly modernised in the 1970s with a sweeping concrete ceiling and contemporary glass.
The cathedral sits on Broadway Avenue a short walk north of The Square. The exterior is plainer than the older All Saints', but the interior is in some ways more interesting — the post-Vatican II rearrangement of the altar, the modernist stained glass, and the unexpected acoustics make it worth a brief stop during a walk through the centre.
