Centrepoint is the city's professional theatre — a 130-seat venue tucked into a converted hall on Church Street, run on a year-round repertory model. Founded in 1974, it is the longest-running fully professional theatre outside the four main centres of New Zealand, and the small company that operates it has launched the careers of a string of well-known Kiwi actors and writers.
The programme is a mix of new New Zealand work, classic plays, and short-run comedies, with usually six or seven productions a year. The intimate space and consistent quality make it worth checking the calendar if you are in Palmy for an evening; a pre-show drink and meal can be had at the bistro attached to the foyer.
