The Regent on Broadway is the most architecturally interesting building in central Palmy. Designed by the prolific cinema architects Charles and Eric Reichard and opened in 1930, it is a near-pristine example of early Art Deco, with a sweeping marble-faced foyer, a 1,400-seat auditorium, and the original stained-glass and brass fittings. The cinema closed in the 1980s and the building was carefully restored in the 1990s as a live performance venue.
The Regent now hosts touring theatre, opera, and concert performances, and a tour of the building can usually be arranged through the Palmy i-SITE visitor centre. Even if there is no performance on, the foyer is worth a look during opening hours — the sweeping staircases and panelled ceilings are intact and impressive.
