German Channel

A wide reef channel between Peleliu and the southern Rock Islands, famous as a manta cleaning station. From November to May the mantas are present in numbers, hovering motionless over coral bommies while small wrasses pick parasites from their gills and bellies. Grey reef sharks and bumphead parrotfish are reliable supporting cast.

Most Koror dive operators run a two- or three-tank day to German Channel and the surrounding sites. Easy to moderate diving; suitable for less experienced divers in calm conditions.

A story
The channel was blasted through the reef in the early 1900s by the German colonial administration to allow phosphate ships to reach the Peleliu mines. It is one of a handful of artificial channels in the region — and accidentally produced one of the great pelagic dive sites in the Pacific.
