The southern of the two main American landing beaches on 15 September 1944, where most of the 1st Marine Regiment came ashore. A simple monument at the back of the beach lists the units that landed here. The beach itself is a long, curving stretch of white coral sand with calm shallow water — beautiful in its own right and easy to imagine packed with landing craft, mortar smoke, and corpses.
A short walk inland brings you to the rusted remains of a Japanese amphibious tank that knocked out an American LVT in the first hour of the landing.
