Thousand Man Cave

A multi-chambered cave complex on the eastern flank of the Umurbrogol, used as a final defensive position by part of the Japanese garrison. Several chambers can be entered with a guide and a torch. Inside are corroded rifles, sake bottles, ration tins, gas mask canisters, and the rusted remains of cooking gear.

The atmosphere is solemn and the experience is not for everyone. Treat the site as a war grave — touch nothing, take nothing.

A story
Towards the end of the battle, hundreds of Japanese soldiers retreated into this cave system rather than surrender. The Marines sealed the entrances with explosives and napalm. Decades later the bones, helmets, gas masks, and personal effects of the men inside were still being found — some have been left in place as a memorial.
