The reinforced concrete command bunker that served as Colonel Kunio Nakagawa's headquarters during the battle. The walls are over a metre thick and still pitted from naval gunfire and direct hits by demolition charges; the interior is open and you can walk through the rooms where the Japanese garrison's defence was directed.
The site is unmarked and unfenced. Bring a torch. Most island guides include it on a half-day battlefield tour.
