Nukufetau is a large atoll in the central part of Tuvalu, consisting of around 33 islets enclosing a wide lagoon. It is lightly populated and rarely visited by outsiders. The community maintains a traditional way of life based on fishing and pulaka cultivation.
During World War II, American forces built an airstrip on Motulalo islet, and remnants of the wartime presence can still be seen. Getting here requires arranging passage on an inter-island boat from Funafuti — there is no regular schedule, and visits require patience and flexibility.
