Berat is well placed for excursions into central Albania. The Monastery of Ardenica, about 30 kilometres west, is a fortified 13th-century monastery with fine frescoes. The ancient ruins of Apollonia (Apolonia), one of the most important Greek colonies on the Adriatic coast, are an easy half-day trip and still being excavated.
