Rufai Tekke

Berat has several active Bektashi and Sufi tekkes — religious lodges used for contemplation, prayer, and communal gathering by dervish brotherhoods. The Rufai Tekke, also known as the Sheikh Riza Tekke, is one of these; the Halveti Tekke nearby is another. Both are set in the lower part of Mangalem and are worth visiting for an understanding of Albanian Islamic practice that differs considerably from mainstream Sunni Islam.

The Bektashi order in particular has deep roots in Albania — the movement's headquarters was in Tirana for many years — and the tekkes often welcome respectful non-Muslim visitors who are curious about Sufi practice. Religious ceremonies are not public, but the buildings and gardens are generally accessible. The combination of mosques and tekkes in close proximity with Orthodox churches is one of the things that makes Berat's religious landscape unusual and worth paying attention to.
