Elbasan Castle

15th-century Ottoman fortress walls enclosing the old town

The 15th-century castle walls are the defining feature of Elbasan's old town, enclosing a rectangular area of around four hectares in the city centre. Large sections of the walls still stand to their full height, with the original towers visible at the corners. You can walk along the top of part of the wall and look out over the rooftops. The main gate on the west side is well preserved and makes a good entry point into the old city.

A story
The Ottoman sultan Mehmed II ordered the fortress built in just a few months in 1466, intending it as a base to subdue the Albanian resistance led by Skanderbeg. Skanderbeg died the following year, and the Ottomans held Elbasan for over four centuries.
