King Mosque (Xhamia e Mbretit)

The King Mosque stands just inside the western gate of the castle walls, a low Ottoman structure with a single minaret and a shaded portico. It dates from 1492, built in the first decades after Elbasan came fully under Ottoman control, and it retains its original proportions even after restoration.

The interior is plain by the standards of later Ottoman mosques — whitewashed walls, a simple mihrab, and light from high windows. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside of prayer times; it is customary to remove shoes before entering. The courtyard fountain and the old plane trees around the entrance make it a pleasant place to pause.

A story
The King Mosque was built in 1492 on the orders of Sultan Bayezid II, making it one of the earliest Ottoman mosques in Albania. During the communist period, it was closed and repurposed as a cinema — a fate shared by many Albanian religious buildings. It was restored and returned to use as a mosque after 1991.
