Holy Resurrection Church, Mborje

The Holy Resurrection Church (Shën Mëria, also called St. Sotir) stands in Mborje, a village three kilometres east of central Korçë. The exterior is a simple Byzantine cross-in-square in stone, but the inside is remarkable: comprehensive 14th-century frescoes, restored in the 2010s, covering nearly every surface of the small nave.

The church is usually locked. The standard arrangement is to ask in the village or at the Medieval Art Museum in Korçë, which can advise on access. Worth the effort if you are at all interested in Byzantine art.

A story
The 14th-century frescoes inside this otherwise modest village church are among the finest medieval Byzantine wall paintings in Albania — and they survive almost intact because the church was locked, padlocked, and bureaucratically forgotten for forty years during the communist era.
