Resurrection Cathedral

The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ is the dominant structure in central Korçë: a vast neo-Byzantine pile of pinkish stone, finished in 1995 on the site of an earlier cathedral demolished under communism. The exterior with its central dome and four corner towers is the more memorable side; the interior is filled with new icons and a continuous program of frescoes.

It works as a navigation landmark and a place to step in from the heat. The square in front is the city's main public space, with the National Museum of Medieval Art a couple of blocks away.

A story
The original 19th-century cathedral on this site was levelled in 1968 during Hoxha's campaign to make Albania the world's first officially atheist state. The current building, finished in 1995, is one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the Balkans — a direct, deliberate, oversized answer to that demolition.
