Karbunarë

A historic Bektashi village south of Lushnjë, home to a tekke and old mosque

Karbunarë is a village a few kilometres south of Lushnjë on the road towards Fier, notable as one of the heartlands of Albanian Bektashism — a Sufi order that took root particularly strongly in Albania and now has its world headquarters in Tirana. The old Bektashi tekke (lodge) in Karbunarë was an important spiritual centre before the communist suppression of religion in 1967, and the rebuilt building still draws pilgrims for the annual festivals.

The village is not a polished tourist destination — it is a working farming community — but it offers a small window onto the heterodox religious tradition that runs alongside more familiar Sunni, Catholic, and Orthodox Albanian identities.
