Buchimas Archaeological Site

The Buchimas archaeological site, about 3 kilometres south of Pogradec along the lakeshore road, is an Illyrian and prehistoric settlement that has been excavated to reveal layers of occupation stretching back to the Neolithic period. The site itself is not dramatically visible — it is largely a low mound with excavation trenches — but the small local museum near the site displays finds from the excavations, including Bronze Age metalwork and Illyrian-period ceramics.

For those interested in Albanian prehistory and Illyrian culture, Buchimas is worth the short trip from Pogradec. The drive south along the lake is attractive in itself, passing through small fishing villages and vineyards. A local guide from Pogradec can provide context that the limited on-site interpretation does not. The lake views from this stretch of road are particularly good in the late afternoon.

A story
The Buchimas site has produced some of the most significant Neolithic finds in Albania, including decorated pottery and figurines that suggest organised settlement here more than 6,000 years ago. The Bronze Age layer above the Neolithic level contains metal tools and weapons that indicate contact with wider Balkan trading networks. Albanian archaeologists have been excavating the site since the communist period, and finds from Buchimas are now distributed between the Pogradec museum and the National Historical Museum in Tirana.
