Lake Ohrid Beach and Promenade

The lakeside promenade running along the Pogradec waterfront is the social heart of the town, lined with cafes and restaurants and busy with families in the evenings. The beach along this strip is the best urban beach in Albania — the water is genuinely clear and the setting, with mountains rising on both sides of the lake, is beautiful. The Albanian side of Lake Ohrid gets considerably less tourist traffic than the Macedonian side around Ohrid city, which means the beaches here are relatively uncrowded even in summer.

Swimming in the lake is the primary activity, and the water temperature is pleasant from June to September. The promenade is also good for watching the fishermen who work the lake at dawn and dusk, using traditional methods that have changed little over centuries. The koran trout — an endemic species found only in Lake Ohrid — is served in the restaurants along the promenade and is the dish to order in Pogradec.

A story
Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in the world — estimated at between 4 and 10 million years old — and one of the deepest in the Balkans, reaching over 286 metres at its lowest point. The lake's age and depth have allowed an extraordinary range of endemic species to evolve in isolation: over 200 species found nowhere else on earth, including the Ohrid trout (koran) and a primitive freshwater sponge. The clarity of the water — visibility can exceed 20 metres in places — is the result of this deep, ancient ecosystem.
