Royal Tombs of Selca e Poshtme

Illyrian rock-cut tombs near Pogradec, carved into a hillside above the Shkumbin valley.

The Royal Tombs of Selca e Poshtme are among the most evocative ancient sites within reach of Pogradec. Cut into the rock above the village, the tombs are associated with Illyrian elites and show how local rulers adapted Greek and Macedonian forms without simply copying them.

This is a rougher excursion than the lakeside promenade, and that is part of the appeal. Expect a rural setting, uneven ground, and limited interpretation on site. Go with transport arranged and a little background reading, then combine it with the mountain villages west of Lake Ohrid if you want a fuller day out.
