Vartanants Square

Grand central square flanked by tufa churches and cafes

The main square of Gyumri and the natural starting point for exploring the city. Flanked by the two largest churches — Amenaprkitch and Yot Verk — and surrounded by restored 19th-century buildings in black and orange tufa. The square was the centre of Russian-era Alexandrapol and retains a grand, slightly formal feel. On summer evenings locals gather here and the cafes around the edges fill up.
