Areni Church

Medieval Armenian church above Areni village, near caves, vineyards, and the road to Noravank.

Areni Church stands above the village of Areni, in the wine-growing valley that many travellers pass through on the way to Noravank. Its small, elegant form and elevated position make it more than a quick roadside marker.

The church works best with the surrounding landscape: vineyards below, reddish cliffs nearby, and the Areni-1 cave complex close at hand. It is a good reminder that Vayots Dzor's appeal lies in the way religious sites, archaeology, and wine country overlap.
