Kentron

The downtown core of Yerevan and the centre of almost everything a visitor will do. Kentron contains Republic Square, the Opera, the Cascade, the Matenadaran, the bulk of the museums and embassies, and almost all of the city's best restaurants, cafes, and shops. It is also the most walkable part of the city — most of it can be covered on foot between morning coffee and a long dinner.

The district was largely laid out in the 1920s by Alexander Tamanian, who imagined a green ring boulevard encircling the centre with radial streets fanning out. That basic geometry still holds, though decades of unregulated infill have given Kentron its real character — a layered mix of pink-tufa neoclassicism, glassy 1970s towers, and small surviving 19th-century houses tucked into back alleys.
