An ornamental lake in the park beside the Opera House, ringed by benches, fountains, and a band of outdoor cafes. In winter it freezes solid and turns into an open-air ice rink; in summer the swans return and the cafes spill out across the surrounding paths.
The lake sits at the social centre of Yerevan. Local families, students, and the city's coffee-and-cards crowd all rotate through it in good weather. The Komitas statue on the eastern edge — a stylised modernist tribute to the priest, composer, and ethnographer — is one of the better pieces of post-war public sculpture in the city.
