Kitzbüheler Horn

The Kitzbüheler Horn rises to 1,996 metres directly above Kitzbühel, but it is easily accessible from St. Johann as well. A cable car from Kitzbühel town ascends to the summit ridge, where the views take in the Wilder Kaiser to the north and the Hohe Tauern to the south — on a clear day, the distant glaciers of the Großglockner are visible.

In summer, the Horn is primarily a hiking destination. A network of marked trails runs across the ridge and down into the surrounding valleys, ranging from gentle family walks to longer ridge routes. The Alpine Flower Garden near the upper cable car station is worth a detour in June and July, when the wildflowers are at their peak.

In winter, the Horn forms part of the Kitzbühel ski area, with runs down to the town below. The lift system connects to the Hahnenkamm and the wider SkiWelt network. The famous Hahnenkamm downhill race, held each January in Kitzbühel, is the most dangerous World Cup event on the circuit — from St. Johann you can watch sections of it from the valley.

A story
The Horn's south-facing slopes have one of the most diverse alpine wildflower populations in Tyrol — over 700 species have been recorded, and in June the meadows below the summit turn spectacular shades of pink, yellow, and blue. The Alpine Flower Garden near the top cable car station protects the rarest species and is one of the highest botanical gardens in Austria.
