Juma Mosque

Domed Friday mosque in the medieval Atabegs complex

Address Atabegs Architectural Complex, Nakhchivan

The Juma Mosque, or Friday Mosque of Nakhchivan, forms part of the historic Atabegs' Complex along with the Momine Khatum and Yusif ibn Kuseyir mausoleums. It is a relatively plain brick building with a substantial dome and arched portal, reflecting the local medieval tradition. The mosque suffered serious damage and decay over the centuries and was reconstructed several times.

Inside, the prayer hall is sparsely decorated. The setting matters more than the interior: the mosque anchors the complex of medieval monuments that defines old Nakhchivan, with the slender ten-sided mausoleum a few steps away. Visit together with the Momine Khatum and the statue of the architect Ajami.

A story
The Juma Mosque sits at the heart of the Atabegs' architectural complex, the same 12th-century ensemble that produced the Momine Khatum Mausoleum. Its single large dome and restrained brickwork are typical of the Nakhchivan school of medieval Islamic building. The structure was rebuilt in the 20th century after long decay, and now serves more as monument than working mosque.
