Getting There

Sharur lies on the road between Nakhchivan city, 60 km to the southeast, and the border with Turkey at Sədərək, 80 km to the northwest — the only land link the exclave has to the rest of Azerbaijan, which goes via Turkey or Iran since the Armenian border is closed.

Marshrutka minibuses run regularly from Nakhchivan city to Sharur, and shared taxis are easy to find. The railway through Sharur, built in Soviet times and continuing into Armenia, has been closed since the early 1990s; the station building survives but is not in use.

Most visitors come on a day trip from Nakhchivan city, or pass through on the road north. There are a couple of basic hotels in town for an overnight stop.
